This tool is often associated with the Grim Reaper. And although the person who had to use it probably would have looked a bit grim by the end of the day, it would be from exhaustion, not from collecting souls! This tool was used for cutting grass or wheat crops. Everything had to be done by hand. It was backbreaking, exhausting but necessary work.
