Magnifying lenses have many uses. They make small things more visible. They can also be used, as this one most likely was, as a fire starter. The smaller lens brings light into a tighter focus than a larger lens, and allows the sun to be focused on tinder to light a fire. It was important for early folks to have a reliable fire starter when they didn't have things like Bic lighters!
