Some fish are just too fierce and large to pull into the boat alive. This spear would have been used specifically to help catch sturgeon. Freshwater sturgeons are huge fish. Once the fish got close enough on the line, the unlucky person who watched someone else catch it would be the one to jab the spear into the fish and help bring it safely into the boat.
